Izutsu stable

井筒部屋

Izutsu stable no longer exists. It closed after the death of the 15th Izutsu on 2019-09-16, and its three wrestlers were transferred to Mutsu stable, approved by the Japan Sumo Association board on 2019-09-27. According to Japanese Wikipedia, the stable belonged to the Tokitsukaze ichimon and had been in the Takasago ichimon until 1941, and it was re-founded in June 1947 by the 11th Izutsu. The same source lists the yokozuna (the highest rank in sumo) Nishinoumi Kajiro (2nd and 3rd) and Kakuryu Rikisaburo, and the ozeki (the second-highest rank) Komagatake Kokuriki, Toyokuni Fukuma and Kirishima Kazuhiro, as having been in the stable.

FoundedEarliest known: 1884, founded by the 6th Izutsu (Izutsu Kikujiro); closed on his death in 1887. Late Meiji (no exact year in the source): 1st Nishinoumi Kajiro (16th yokozuna) became the 8th Izutsu and split from Takasago stable. Re-founded in June 1947 by the 11th Izutsu (Tsurugamine Michiyoshi), separating from Futabayama dojo/Tokitsukaze. Renamed Mutsu stable in April 1974; the Izutsu name was revived in December 1977 when Kimigahama stable (14th Izutsu, Tsurugamine Akio) took the name (per Japanese Wikipedia)

According to Japanese Wikipedia, many young men from Kagoshima kept joining the stable because its first modern head, ex-yokozuna Nishinoumi, came from Kagoshima.

According to Japanese Wikipedia, Mongolian-born Kakuryu was promoted to ozeki in May 2012 and to the 71st yokozuna in May 2014 while in the stable.
